MAHATMA GANDHI

Mahatma Gandhi was born in 1869 in Porbander, in western India. He was son to Karamchand Gandhi and his forth wife, Putlibai, whom Gandhi admits had a great influence on him during his childhood.

Once, when he was traveling by train, an officer demanded him to vacate his seat for a white man and, as he refused, he had his things thrown out and was removed from the train by force. This event changed his life and from that day on he decided to fight against discrimination. In 1894, he founded the Natal Indian Congress to carry on the struggle and a newspaper, The Indian Opinion, to give information about it. He trained men, women and children as volunteers, on the basis of Satyagraha, which means truth and firmness. One of his most famous actions was the organization of a campaign that consisted on everyone sewing his own cloths so as to weaken the power that the white people had over them. In 1948 he was shoot as he was walking to a platform to address a prayer meeting.

I admire Gandhi because he fought for a fairer world and never gave up defending his beliefs. I consider him an example of determination and a role model for those who are concerned about the increasing injustice of our world.
